March 2008 Issue 1

Most of us don't have enough stomach acid.

A new study suggests that low levels of hydrochloric acid (HCL) in the stomach can increase one’s likelihood of getting food poisoning, or a foodborne infection. The researchers from Australia report their findings in the February 2008 issue of the Journal Infection and Immunity.

Not only is hydrochloric acid responsisble for digestion, it's also one of our body's powerful defense tools against bacteria and other microorganisms. Those who feel tired after eating may be deficient in HCL, as about 75% of adults over 35 yrs are.

This study showed that mice with low levels of hydrochloric acid had higher amount of the four bacteria tested than healthy mice, and those on antacids had even higher amounts of bacteria due to the absense of acid.

If you are prone to getting infections, upset stomach, food poisoning or overall digestive problems, your body may not be making enough hydrochloric acid!
